MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN / RankWire.AI / – India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is currently in the United States participating in the G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting along with bilateral trade negotiations. The ministerial sessions are scheduled to take place in Milwaukee on September 30 and October 1. According to India’s Commerce Ministry, Goyal will also hold a meeting with his U.S. counterpart during his visit. The agenda for these talks includes discussions on the India-U.S. Bilateral Trade Agreement, with efforts aimed at reaching an interim trade deal based on the joint framework set for February 2026.

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer is hosting the G20 gathering, which convenes trade ministers from member economies of the group. The official agenda encompasses key topics such as forced labour within global supply chains and issues related to structural excess production capacity. Participants will also deliberate on the Most-Favoured-Nation principle and trade restrictions concerning food products. Throughout the event, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative has scheduled ministerial sessions across both days, alongside various meetings and industry-focused activities in Milwaukee.
India has emphasized that it intends to leverage this gathering to promote an open, transparent, and non-discriminatory multilateral trading system anchored by the World Trade Organization. The government has also underlined the importance of maintaining policy flexibility for developing nations. Goyal is expected to hold bilateral discussions with other participating ministers on the sidelines, where topics will include opportunities for farmers, fishermen, women entrepreneurs, startups, small businesses, and other enterprises involved in both domestic and international trade.
Focus shifts back to trade agreement negotiations
The ongoing India-U.S. trade talks build upon a joint framework announced in February, which aims at an interim agreement fostering reciprocal and mutually advantageous trade relations. This framework also reaffirmed negotiations on a broader Bilateral Trade Agreement and outlined commitments related to tariffs and market access for industrial goods as well as various agricultural products. Additional areas of focus include medical devices, information and communications technology, standards, and supply-chain cooperation. Both governments continue to work toward finalizing the interim agreement within the scope of broader bilateral negotiations.
Goyal’s visit to the U.S. spans from September 29 to October 5, extending beyond the G20 meetings to include engagements with business leaders and investors in Milwaukee and Chicago. These interactions will cover sectors such as manufacturing, consumer goods, agribusiness, retail, and technology. The schedule also features roundtable discussions with startups and other companies. In Chicago, the minister will meet with professional associations representing the Indian community and participate in scheduled commemorative events during his stay.
Supply chains and capacity issues take center stage at G20
The Milwaukee portion of the program includes a Global Forum on Steel Excess Capacity scheduled for September 30, with G20 ministers also expected to visit a Rockwell Automation facility before the formal opening session later that day. Additional ministerial meetings are planned for October 1. As the current holder of the G20 presidency in 2026, the United States has identified forced labour, excess capacity, food trade, and the Most-Favoured-Nation principle as key topics for discussion during the summit.
India and the United States began negotiations for a broader bilateral trade agreement in February 2025, with the February 2026 framework maintaining active discussions and setting the foundation for an interim deal. Goyal’s engagements in Milwaukee are part of this ongoing process, focusing on advancing the bilateral agreement and completing the interim arrangement outlined in the joint framework. The G20 meetings will continue through October 1, while Goyal’s overall U.S. trip extends through October 5.
