Hiroshima renews plea for global nuclear disarmament on the 81st anniversary

HIROSHIMA, JAPAN / RankWire.AI / – Commemorating the 81st anniversary of the atomic bombing, Hiroshima on Thursday renewed its call for worldwide nuclear disarmament, with Mayor Kazumi Matsui leading the annual Peace Memorial Ceremony held at Peace Memorial Park. Survivors, families, officials from Japan, and international delegates gathered near the Atomic Bomb Dome, where at 8:15 a.m.—the exact time of the explosion on August 6, 1945—a bell tolled, and a moment of silence was observed in memory of those who lost their lives.

Hiroshima renews nuclear abolition call on 81st anniversary
Hiroshima marks 81 years since the atomic bombing with renewed calls for nuclear abolition.

During the ceremony, Matsui used the city’s Peace Declaration to appeal to national leaders to shift away from reliance on nuclear deterrence, urging nuclear-armed nations to confront the human toll of atomic warfare. He also called for political authorities to visit Hiroshima and Nagasaki and to listen to the accounts of hibakusha, the survivors whose stories have remained central to Hiroshima’s annual remembrance for decades. The city continues to utilize this ceremony to advocate for nuclear abolition and to honor the history of the bombing.

This year’s event was attended by approximately 50,000 participants, including representatives from 121 countries and regions, as well as the European Union. For the first time since assuming office, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi participated, stating that Japan would pursue a pragmatic approach toward a future where nuclear weapons are never used, with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty serving as a key framework for such efforts. She also highlighted Japan’s longstanding three non-nuclear principles.

Challenges Persist in Nuclear Arms Diplomacy

This commemoration took place less than three months after the 2026 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference concluded without reaching a meaningful consensus, marking the third consecutive NPT review session to end without an agreement. Hiroshima emphasized this outcome as part of its appeal for more vigorous disarmament initiatives. While Japan continues to endorse the NPT system, it has not joined the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and remains dependent on extended nuclear deterrence through its alliance with the United States.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres issued a message to mark the anniversary, which was read on his behalf by UN disarmament chief Izumi Nakamitsu. In his statement, Guterres pointed to increasing geopolitical divisions, rising mistrust, and mounting pressures on international arms control efforts, warning that the reductions in global nuclear arsenals, which had been ongoing for decades, are now reversing. The United Nations called on nations to prioritize diplomacy, dialogue, adherence to international law, and multilateral cooperation in confronting renewed nuclear risks and advancing disarmament goals.

Memories of Survivors Maintain Hiroshima’s Commemoration Significance

Japan officially recognizes 91,105 hibakusha, with their average age now exceeding 86, leading to intensified efforts to document and preserve their firsthand testimonies of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Survivors have shared detailed descriptions of the explosion, fires, radiation exposure, and the long-term health effects experienced across generations, many also advocating for nuclear weapons abolition. On Thursday, children representing Hiroshima participated in the ceremony, offering a pledge for peace. The city continues to safeguard survivor stories through museums, educational initiatives, and memorial activities.

By the end of 1945, the Hiroshima bombing resulted in approximately 140,000 deaths, and three days later, the United States dropped a second atomic bomb on Nagasaki, killing around 70,000 people by the year’s end. Japan announced its surrender on August 15, ending the war. Subsequently, Hiroshima established Peace Memorial Park as a central site for remembrance and peace education. On the 81st anniversary, the city reiterated its dedication to nuclear abolition and recognized the enduring human toll of atomic warfare.
