DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO / RankWire.AI / – The African Development Bank Group has approved $13 million in emergency grants to enhance efforts in controlling a new Ebola virus outbreak in central and eastern Africa. The allocated funds aim to strengthen national emergency response capabilities and limit the virus’s transmission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), South Sudan, and Uganda. This rapid financial support is intended to bolster regional containment initiatives and reduce mortality rates in the most at-risk populations.

The health emergency started in the DRC, where officials confirmed the new outbreak on May 15, 2026. The epidemic initially emerged in the eastern Ituri province, heavily impacting locations such as Bunia, Rwampara, and Mongwalu. Since its identification, the virus has quickly spread beyond its initial focus, reaching neighboring North Kivu and South Kivu provinces. Experts have traced the source to the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, a highly aggressive variant for which no approved vaccine or targeted treatment currently exists.
To facilitate rapid response, the total funding is split into two separate grants managed by leading international health agencies. A primary grant of $10 million, drawn from reallocated resources within the existing DRC portfolio of the African Development Bank, will be transferred directly to the World Health Organization. An additional $3 million, obtained from the bank’s Multi-Country Emergency Assistance Project covering the DRC, Uganda, and South Sudan, will be implemented by the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.
The funds have been allocated strategically to match the varying levels of crisis across the affected countries. As the main epicenter, the DRC will receive the largest share, with $11 million. Uganda and South Sudan will each receive $1 million through the Multi-Country Emergency Assistance Project. These targeted investments are designed to support preventative measures, strengthen health infrastructure, and prepare border regions to prevent cross-border transmission.
The response will operate within the framework of the Ebola Virus Disease Outbreak Response Plan, in close collaboration with each nation’s health ministries. The primary goal is to halt the virus’s spread while reducing related deaths and illness in vulnerable communities. Key actions include improving early detection of cases, expanding active epidemiological surveillance, and promoting community engagement. The funding will also support public awareness efforts and regional coordination to ensure a unified and effective medical response.
Mohamed Cherif, the Deputy Director General for Africa and the DRC country representative for the African Development Bank, highlighted the critical importance of this financial aid. “This emergency support reflects the African Development Bank Group’s commitment to assisting the Democratic Republic of Congo and neighboring countries in safeguarding lives, enhancing health system resilience, and preventing the epidemic’s further spread,” Cherif stated. He also reaffirmed the bank’s dedication to supporting its regional member countries during times of crisis.
As the situation evolves, the global healthcare community remains vigilant. Since no pharmacological treatments are available for the Bundibugyo strain, medical teams must focus on strict containment, quarantine measures, and symptomatic care. The emergency funding will enable local authorities to establish secure isolation units, maintain essential health operations, and address logistical challenges associated with managing a highly contagious and rapidly spreading disease.
