Gold Maintains Above $4,400 Ahead of U.S. Inflation Data Release

UNITED ARAB EMIRATES / RankWire.AI / – Gold prices gained marginally on Thursday, buoyed by a softer U.S. dollar ahead of upcoming U.S. inflation reports. The spot price for gold increased by 0.3% to reach $4,414.28 per ounce by 0419 GMT, while U.S. gold futures for December delivery declined slightly by 0.1% to settle at $4,457.20. This early upward movement kept the spot gold above the $4,400 level after a notable reversal during Wednesday’s trading, when gold initially dipped but ultimately closed more than 1% higher for the session.

Gold stays above $4,400 before US inflation releases
Gold prices hold above $4,400 as U.S. inflation data and interest rates stay in focus.

The U.S. dollar remained subdued in early trading, providing support for dollar-denominated precious metals. A decline in the dollar makes gold more affordable for buyers using other currencies, while the benchmark U.S. 10-year Treasury yield stayed near 4.84%, maintaining its elevated level. Since gold does not pay interest, fluctuations in bond yields are a key factor influencing the metals market. Meanwhile, Brent crude oil prices remained above $100 a barrel after surpassing that mark during the previous trading session.

Market attention was also focused on two significant U.S. inflation reports scheduled for release, with producer price index data set for 1230 GMT on Thursday and consumer inflation figures due on Friday. The Federal Reserve’s upcoming meeting on September 15 and 16 continues to revolve around inflation considerations, which remain crucial in its interest rate decisions. According to CME Group’s FedWatch Tool, markets assign approximately a 60% chance of a U.S. rate hike this month, with the current federal funds target range at 3.50% to 3.75%.

Inflation Data in Focus as Gold Holds Above $4,400

Wednesday’s trading marked a sharp shift from the earlier session, with spot gold dropping 0.1% to $4,349.44 an ounce at 0040 GMT. However, by 1744 GMT, prices had risen 1.4% to $4,414.30. U.S. gold futures for December delivery increased by 0.5% to close at $4,458.80, ending a three-day decline for the metal. The early Thursday spot price in Asia remained close to Wednesday’s later-session level as trading activity persisted.

Other precious metals showed mixed results on Thursday; silver advanced by 0.3% to $67.50 an ounce, platinum declined by 0.4% to $1,888.05, and palladium moved up by 0.2% to $1,356.20. These movements followed broader gains on the previous day, when silver surged 3.3% to $67.91, platinum increased 5.1% to $1,906.20, and palladium rose 1.2% to $1,365.50. The overall performance of these metals remains highly responsive to currency fluctuations, bond yields, and expectations regarding interest rates.

Precious Metals Exhibit Mixed Trends Amid Rising Oil and Bond Yields

The gold market’s performance was also influenced by rising oil prices and ongoing tensions in the Persian Gulf region. Brent crude stayed above $100 a barrel on Thursday, amid reports that Iran claimed to have attacked 10 ships near the Strait of Hormuz following the U.S. sinking of five Iranian oil tankers. These developments represent a further escalation of disruptions affecting maritime shipping through the region. Additionally, oil prices and global bond yields remained elevated as traders and investors monitored inflation trends across major economies.

The spot gold price on Thursday was approximately 1.5% higher than its early Wednesday level of $4,349.44, with December futures also maintaining levels above the early Wednesday reading of $4,393.30. The current interest rate range set by the Federal Reserve, along with recent inflation data, continue to serve as critical benchmarks for global precious metals trading. Gold’s price stayed above $4,400, while silver remained above $67 per ounce, reflecting that most of Wednesday’s rebound was retained as investors await the upcoming U.S. producer and consumer inflation reports.
